Subfamily Agapetinae Martynov

Genus Agapetsu Curtis

Seven species of this genus have been recorded in Japan. Iwata (1927a, b) recorded European species, Agapetus comatus Pictet and A. fuscipes Curtis from Japan based on larval specimens, but Tsuda (1958) and Nozaki et al. (1994) pointed out his identifications were wrong.

Remarks: Agapetus japonicas was synonymized under A. sibricus by Kim (1974), but he did not show any evidence of the synonym. Therefore, the former name had been used in Japan until 2007 when Nozaki and Tanida (2007) confirmed the synonym by comparing Japanese adult specimens and illustrations of Korean specimen.
    Hattori (2005) included Shikoku in the distribution area of this species, but reliable records with specimen data in Shikoku have not been published so far.

Remarks. In Hokkaido, distribution of this species is restricted in southwestern part and G. neffi, which is closely similar species, is distributed instead of G. altaicum in the other area (Kuhara, 2008). This species, however, has been recorded in eastern Hokkaido by some reports, one of which was confirmed to be misidentification of the latter (see “Glossosoma (Synafophora) neffi”).
    A record of this species in Akita, Honshu by Tanaka (2009a) was deleted by Tanaka (2010b).
