Subfamily Arctopsychinae Martynov

Two genera, Arctopsyche McLachlan and Parapsyche Betten, are known from Japan.

Genus Arctopsyche McLachlan

Only two named species have been known from Japan, but four unnamed species accompanied with an alphabetic code have been described based only on the larval stage. Arctopsyche hirayamai described by Matsumura (1931) was transfered to the genus Plectrocnemia (Polycentropodidae) by Ohkawa and Ito (2007).

Subfamily Diplectroninae Ulmer

Two genera, Diplectrona and Homoplectra, has been recorded from Japan.

Genus Diplectrona Westwood

Six named species are known from Japan. Diplectrona albomarginata Ulmer 1907 and Diplectrona tohokuensius Kobayashi 1973 were transferred to the genus Homoplectra (Nozaki 2009, 2021). Diplectrona japonica (Banks, 1906), originally described as a member of the genus Arctopsyche, was also transferred to the genus Homoplectra (Nozaki 2021).

Remarks. Malicky (2002) reported geographic variations of the male genitalia in this species and provided illustrations of males collected from Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. On the other hand, Oláh et al. (2021) recognized each population of the latter three countries as a distinct species based on the illustrations by Malicky (2002).

Remarks. This larva is very similar to that of Diplectrona sp. DC (Tanida, 1997, 2003). Although Tanida (1997) examined both larval and adult specimens, the specific status has not yet been clarified.

Remarks. This species has distinct yellow markings on the forewings (Banks 1906) and many authors recorded as this species based on this characteristic markings. Genus Cheumatopsyche Wallengren

The genus Hydropsychodes Ulmer was synonymized with this genus by Kimmins (1963). Eleven species belonging to this genus have been recorded from Japan. Tanida (2003, 2005) provided illustrations of an unidentified larva from Ryukyu Islands.

Shimura (2015) recorded this species from Fukue-jima based on identification of the larval stage.

Subfamily Macronematinae Ulmer

Only the genus Macrostemum is known from Japan. Species of the genus Macronema recorded from Nearctic, Oriental, Ethiopian and Australasian Regions were transferred to the genus Macrostemum by Flint and Bueno-Soria (1982).
