Three subfamily, Dicosmoecinae, Limnephilinae and Pseudostenophilacinae, are known from Japanese islands. Metanoea iijimae Iwata 1928 and Stenophylax kitagamii Iwata 1927 were transferred to the genus Apatania Kolenati, Apataniidae, by Nozaki et al. (2000), and Anabolia kawamurai Iwata 1927 was synonymized with Georgium japonicum (Ulmer), Calamoceratidae, by Tsuda (1954, 1958).

Type locality. Russia (Sakhalin).
Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu), Sakhalin.
Remarks. Martynov (1914) suggested that the female illustrated as L. amurensis by Ulmer (1907a) might belong to A. sachalinensis. Schmid (1954, 1955) pointed out that this species was distributed in Sakhalin and Japan, whereas A. amurensis was a continental species. However, Kuhara and Kuranishi (1997) suggested that it was necessary to confirm the species validity of this species and A. amurensis, since there were remarkable variations in the male genitalia of A. amurensis. Nozaki (2005a, 2016) recognized that Japanese specimens belong to this species.

Two unnamed larvae accompanied with alphabetic codes were described, which were not associated with adults. Iwata (1928) recorded Limnophilus decipiens Kolenati by a larva collected from Nagano, central Japan, however, Nozaki and Tanida (1996) suggested that the larva is similar to that of Asynarchus amurensis.

Limnephilus borealis Zetterstedt: Kobayashi 1968, 5, Honshu (Niigata) (Limnophilus). Misidentification mentioned by Nozaki and Tanida (1996).
Type locality. Hokkaido (Sapporo), Japan.
Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku), Kuriles, China.
Remarks. Kadowaki (1998) recorded L. borealis from Shimane, central Honshu, and the identification was made by Mr. Kobayashi. However, it is probably a misidentification of N. nipponicus same as the record of L. borealis by Kobayashi (1968). Tsuda and Tatsumi (1951) recorded Limnephilus affinis from Niigata Prefecture, but the record may be based on a misidentification of this species.
